How to Rotate Tires

Count on the experts at your local Firestone Complete Auto Care to provide tire rotation services.

What is a tire rotation?

A tire rotation involves changing the position of each tire on your vehicle to prevent uneven wear over time. We recommend that you rotate your tires every 7,500 miles or 6 months. When you bring your vehicle to a Firestone Complete Auto Care location near you for a tire rotation, one of our expert technicians will remove the tires, swap positions, and remount them according to the tire rotation pattern recommended for your vehicle.

How to rotate tires: Tire rotation patterns

There are a few different ways a set of tires can be rotated. The right tire rotation pattern for your vehicle depends on the type of tires you have, whether your vehicle is front, rear, or four-wheel drive, whether your tires are directional or non-directional, and the size of all your tires. You can find the right tire rotation pattern for your vehicle in your owner’s manual. Here are the most common tire rotation patterns:

Rearward Cross

  • Tires that are uniform in size and non-directional
  • 4-wheel, all-wheel, rear-wheel drive vehicles
  • Rear tires stay on the same side and move to the forward axle; front tires move to the rear axle and the opposite side

X-Pattern

  • Tires that are uniform in size and non-directional
  • Front-wheel drive vehicles like light trucks and sedans
  • All four tires are moved diagonally (switch axle and side)

Forward Cross

  • Tires that are uniform in size and non-directional
  • Most common for front-wheel drive vehicles
  • Front tires stay on the same side and move to the rear axle; rear tires move to the front axle and the opposite side

Front-to-Rear

  • Directional tires
  • All tires moved from one axle to the other but remain on the same side of the vehicle.

Side-to-Side

  • High performance tires
  • All tires switch with the tire of the same size and remain on the same axle.

Why is tire rotation important?

Tire rotation is an important facet of tire upkeep and maintenance. It also may be required to ensure your tires are covered under warranty. In addition to better performance and handling, tire rotation is essential for:

Longer tread life

Front and rear tires wear differently so regular tire rotation ensures wear is spread evenly across all four tires and tread life is maximized.

Improved fuel efficiency

Tire rotations ensure your tires are performing at their best, delivering top notch traction, stability and maximizing every tank of gas.

Overall maintenance

Regular tire rotation service is also a good opportunity to inspect tires for damage, remove debris and check tire depth.
